More Delusions From The Religious Right

I don’t think there will ever be a time when I don't use that title.

We begin with NOM’s plan to stop the possible legalization of civil unions in Bermuda:

There are rumors that the government of Bermuda is looking at creating same-sex civil unions — without letting the people have a say through a referendum. It is urgent that the people of Bermuda have the same right to vote on the future of marriage as Slovenia just exercised.

If you have friends or family that are residents or citizens of Bermuda please send them this email. Please ask them to forward to their friends and family.

Please ask everyone in Bermuda to contact Premier Michael Dunkley and Senator Michael Fahey and urge them to oppose same-sex unions and support the people's right to vote by clicking here.

“Ask everyone in Bermuda”. It’s hard to think of a plan that could be more smoothly and flawlessly executed. If you live in New York, maybe you might consider jumping on the next cruise ship there just to do so.

Next, in their latest of a series of fundraising pleas (they’re having trouble raising $200,000 before 2016 starts), they defend ex-gay “therapy”:

And here's something else that you should realize — if we do not fight with everything we have, the moral climate of our nation will only deteriorate further. Many of the same people who advocated redefining marriage are now agitating for "gender identity" laws so that men can utilize intimate facilities reserved for women. They are telling children that gender is an artificial social construct that anyone can change to suit their feelings. They argue that while taxpayers should pay for gender change procedures, it should be illegal to counsel a person who wants to leave the homosexual lifestyle. They claim that plural marriage including polygamy is a good thing and should also be a "constitutional right." And yet, they assert children have no rights to a mother and a father.

Everything they said there is stupid, but I highlighted that because nothing else is surprising. For an organisation that claims to have no problem with gay people, they sure do have a big problem with gay people.

Next, Mike Huckabee, Bobby Jindal and Ted Cruz’s favorite executions-of-gay-people supporting pastor Kevin Swanson is now going after Hillary Clinton:

Last month, assiduously antigay Colorado pastor Kevin Swanson managed to corral three Republican candidates to speak at one of his events, which he spent talking ad infinitum about the need to execute gay people, the sin that is birth control, and the perils of liking Harry Potter.

Speaking on his “Generations Radio” program on Monday, Swanson acknowledged that he was “severely mocked” for his commentary, but that Americans must nonetheless repent or God will punish the nation by making Hillary Clinton president (by magically fixing the polls, or something).

Clinton, he insists, will then lead “tremendous majorities of American kids” down “the track towards homosexuality.”

The last one I’ll bring up is much more sinister. Earlier this month, Cincinnati banned ex-gay “therapy” for minors in memory of Leelah Alcorn. I just recently came across this report on the ban from religious right extremist site LifeSiteNews, which attempts to identify what really causes harm for LGBT youth:

But many professionals in the field of psychiatry disagree that parental or religious non-acceptance of homosexuality or gender confusion is the cause of gay suicides. "Homosexuality is a causative factor in depression," explains Dr. Lynne Pappas.

"When we talk of disease, we think automatically of a pathogen or bug growing in us, or an infection caused by bacteria or virus, as opposed to something that is caused by an infection of the soul," Dr. Pappas explains. "That is what [homosexuality and gender confusion] is."

"As with so many things in our society today, we have 'normalized' so much that it is getting harder and harder for people to see what the infection is."

"It is eating you away inside, and you keep covering things up, and acting as if that is how it should be," Dr. Pappas continues. "This is how it is with a life of homosexuality."

"You think, on the surface, that you are okay, you are happy, but in reality, inside, you are not. You keep playing at it, and playing at it," Dr. Pappas concludes. "If people who are struggling don't know that they are missing God, then they are not going to arrive at seeing that this is what it is all about.”

So if your parents reject you for being gay, that’s not going to cause you harm, according to this fruitcake. Can you get more deluded and in denial of the bleedin’ obvious? Any child born to someone that stupid, LGBT or not, is already doomed. You don’t need a study to tell you this, just common sense, but here’s a study anyway:

Of all the agencies’ LGBT homeless clients, 68 percent have experienced family rejection and more than half (54 percent) experienced abuse in their family.

[...]

Family rejection is devastating the lives of young people across the country, and very few organizations outside the Family Acceptance Project are addressing this issue. It’s all too easy to see LGBT homeless youth as an invisible population, but there is a very visible onslaught of anti-gay and anti-trans propaganda specifically targeting parents to raise their fears of the LGBT community. Rather than protecting children, the anti-gay efforts led by conservative evangelical Christians may very well be causing the exact kinds of child abuse that they blame LGBT people for.

Not satisified, Dr. F*ckwit? (There’s another epithet I’m sure I’ll use a lot more.) Here’s another one:

A new study from the Family Acceptance Project (FAP) finds that though there are a number of sources of support for LGBT youth, none has as big an impact as acceptance by families. Peer support, community support, and being out and open all contributed to life satisfaction, self-esteem, and sense of self-worth for young people, but family support had a significantly stronger influence to overall adjustment and well-being. The article, “Social Support Networks for LGBT Young Adults: Low Cost Strategies for Positive Adjustment,” appears in the July issue of the Family Relations journal.

Anyone who promotes the idea that family rejection does not harm LGBT youth, like Pappas and LifeSiteNews, are deliberately making conservative parents feel like what they are doing is okay, and is therefore pure evil. And I don’t care how intolerant or uncivil the right thinks that is.
